Black History Month is held every October in Britain. People throughout the borough will have the opportunity to get a 'taste of traditions' as Hillingdon celebrates Black History Month this October.
Following a theme of exciting food and flavours, the council's library service will provide a programme of events including music, poetry, performance, readings, workshops and activities all celebrating the contribution of black people in the community.
A Prejudice and Pride exhibition will run from September 18 to October 15 at the Central Library, Uxbridge displaying photographs which chronicle the arrival of people to the UK from the West Indies in the 1940s and ‘50s and presents images of Black service life in the British Forces during the second world war.
Local publisher and writer Verna Wilkins will hold workshops for budding writers of all ages on October 18 and 20. On October 18 there will be a workshop for youngsters from Uxbridge schools from 12.30 to 1.30pm and one for adults on October 20 from 5.30pm to 7pm when they can pick up some hot tips for success.
Venavi drums will perform a celebration of African music and dance, with traditional costume and decoration…and there’s an opportunity to do more than just watch! Venavi drums workshops will run on October 28 and 29 at Hayes Stadium Sports Centre and Queensmead Sports Centre, South Ruislip respectively.
From October 29 a touring Feasts and Flavours exhibition will visit various libraries around the borough with colourful displays about different foods and food preparation techniques from various cultures throughout the world.
Children up to 8 years old can enjoy some Sugar and Spice at family story and activity times with colouring sheets, word-searches and mazes on the theme of foods from around the world.
All people are made alike. They are made of bones, flesh and dinners. Only the dinners are different! Gertrude Louise Cheney, 1927
